Live Like Us

Written by Vanessa Oakes with the Company. Directed by Tom Bailey. Original soundtrack by Si Hayden. Photography and video projection by Paul Blakemore and Dom Breadmore

Inspired and performed by young adults from the Belgrade Community & Education Company’s Acting Up group, Live Like Us ran from 20 to 24 February 2007.

A brand new black comedy, Live Like Us takes a dark and humorous look at the lives of a group of teenagers trying to get by in Coventry. Its gritty, urban and funny plot is full of twists, as Kevin talks to ghosts, Paul loses the plot and Jess is held hostage – all while having to deal with a lethal toaster and a corpse in a wheelie bin!

As well as creating an extraordinary production, the Acting Up participants learned a great deal through being involved in this project – such as how theatre can be used as a tool to highlight both local and national events and issues. Many of them had also never toured a production before so they gained useful touring experience.

The play was performed in Coventry’s AUEW Building (20 February), African Carribean Centre for Young People (22 February), Jardine Crescent Young People’s Centre (23 February) and Henley Green Community Centre (24 February).

Live Like Us contained strong language and adult themes, and was suitable for ages 14 and over.
