Posted on 8 July 2011

Acclaimed Hollywood actor, Sir Ian McKellen, will return to the Belgrade on Sunday 4 September to celebrate his 50th year in the acting business, which began in 1961 on the Belgrade’s Main Stage.

Entitled “Back at the Belgrade” – Ian McKellen celebrates 50 years of acting, this unique, one off performance, which will raise funds for the Belgrade Theatre, sees the award-winning actor take to the Main Stage once again to perform some of his favourite theatrical scenes, answer questions from the audience and talk about his hugely successful career, which has spanned both stage and screen.

It all started in 1961 when he got his first job in a Belgrade production of A Man for All Seasons. He went on to appear in 15 Belgrade productions before moving on to perform in theatres around the country including the National Theatre and the RSC. Throughout his career he has also appeared in numerous Hollywood blockbusters such as X-Men, Gods and Monsters, for which his performance was Oscar-nominated, and the multi-award winning Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Sir Ian McKellen is part of a long list of Belgrade alumni who have gone on to forge successful careers in the performing arts industry including screen actors Clive Owen, Richard Briers, David Suchet and Rosemary Leach and acclaimed directors such as Sir Trevor Nunn.
