Award-winning Director, Sir Michael Boyd, Launches Pledge To Support Drama In Schools

Posted on 30 January 2015

We were delighted to be joined by former Artistic Director of the RSC and Belgrade Theatre alumni, Sir Michael Boyd earlier this week, who was on hand to launch our brand new pledge, ‘I Support Drama In Schools’.

We believe that every child should have a right to drama as a regular part of their curriculum. Drama has been increasingly marginalised within the school curriculum as a non-essential subject. We believe that a good education needs to provide a balance between being taught facts, and being provided with the opportunity to explore and learn for oneself. Drama is an essential way for children to reflect on and understand the world in which they live.

Throughout the year we’ll be asking people to join our campaign to support schools to inspire curiosity in young people through drama. Here’s just a few of the fantastic pledges we’ve received so far:

“I support drama in schools because it allows young people to explore ideas and emotions in a safe environment. It also gives them a greater understanding of themselves, others and the world around them.”

Fiona Bruce – TiE Alumni

“I support drama in schools because it develops confidence, self-belief and a voice with which to be heard in an increasingly complex and challenging world.”

Tony Jackson

“I support drama in schools because theatre arts are the quickest and best ways of developing all the skills that a 21st Century economy needs; innovation, creativity, ethics, imagination, humanity.”

Piers Ibbotson – TiE Alumni

“I support drama in schools because it develops confidence and communication skills, and improves performance and presentation skills.”

Frances Coyler – TiE Alumni

If, like us, you believe every child has a right to access drama as a regular part of their curriculum, now’s your chance to shout about it by pledging YOUR support. To find out more about getting involved, visit our new Inspiring Curiosity website today.

A huge thank you to Sir Michael Boyd for joining us for the launch of Inspiring Curiosity and to all those who have pledged their support so far.
