Shoot Festival heads to Hull

Posted on 30 January 2017

We’re excited to share the developments of our Springboard Companies. This post is written by Jen Davis, Co-Founder/Producer of Shoot Festival, who is sharing what the team have in store for Coventry after their visit to Hull!

The Shoot Festival team have just touched down in Coventry town after a brilliant visit to Hull. So, why did we travel 140 miles on a freezing January morning? Well, not only did we want to experience this year’s City of Culture but we were also on our way to meet with fellow festival organisers Madeleine O’Reilly and Bex Phillips from Assemble Fest.

Assemble Fest is a one-day theatre festival that takes place down Newland Avenue in Hull, working with local traders on the avenue, specially commissioned shows are performed multiple times in the businesses. At Shoot, we’re always looking for new ways we can grow and expand the festival so we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to learn from our Northern counterpart.

After arriving in Hull we hopped on a bus to Newland Avenue to meet the team and talk festivals. Like Shoot, Assemble Fest supports new work being made in Hull and aims to remove the barriers people can run into when trying to access the arts. Many coffees later, it was time for the team to set up for their 2017 launch. It was brilliant to see so many companies and businesses brought together by this incredible local initiative – we were just a little disappointed we didn’t win 5 English breakfast’s in the raffle.

And so, we headed back to Coventry with a notebook full of ideas and plans for our future but don’t panic there’s still time to get involved with this year’s festival!
