Riding it Out Until the End – Play Your Part sponsored bike ride

Posted on 28 October 2019

As work continues at the Belgrade Theatre as part of our ongoing 2020 Redevelopment Project, Belgrade staff have been doing their bit to help raise the remaining money needed to complete the work.On Tuesday 22 October, our dedicated Box Office Assistant Thomas Watts completed a sponsored bike ride in our foyer, beating his £200 fundraising target in aid of our Play Your Part campaign.

Situated just inside the B2 entrance to the theatre, Thomas undertook his challenge on an exercise bike kindly lent to us by our friends at JD Gyms. Not only was the bike close to the window, in full view of passers-by, but it was also one of the busiest days of the year in our foyer, coinciding with our always popular half-term Family Fun Day.

Thomas’ initial target of biking 50km in eight hours was quickly completed and he was able to reach a total of 61km – the perfect distance to match the theatre’s age! After celebrating our 60th anniversary last year, it’s exciting to be undergoing important renovations in preparation for Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture in 2021.

“I really enjoyed the 8 hour cycle for the Belgrade Theatre redevelopment,” said Thomas. “It gave me the chance to do something for the Theatre, as it has done so much for me over the years. The challenge itself was not that hard once I started and got into it, I am just very happy to have helped the theatre.”

We would like to say a big thank you to Thomas for his fundraising efforts, as well as to the other members of staff who took over at intervals throughout the day, enabling him to take much-needed breaks. We would also like to thank JD Gyms and their General Manager Luke Church for lending us the bike.

As a registered charity (number 219163), the Belgrade Theatre relies heavily on donations from Members, businesses and the general public to continue its vital work in the community. Among the wide range of major changes that our 2020 Redevelopment Project encompasses are measures to improve our long-term financial and environmental sustainability, as well as a brand new meeting and rehearsal space to be used by our wide-ranging community groups and talent development projects.
