Podcast: Dawn Walton and Janice Okoh discuss The Gift

Posted on 17 December 2019

In our new podcast series, we’re taking a look at Janice Okoh’s searingly funny new play The Gift, which premieres in Coventry from 18-25 Jan as part of Eclipse Theatre’s Revolution Mix project – the largest ever delivery of Black British stories across theatre, film and radio.

For the first episode, we spoke to director Dawn Walton and playwright Janice Okoh about some of the inspirations for the play, including the classic British comedy of manners, cross-cultural adoption, and the real-life story of Sarah Bonetta Davies, a West African girl “gifted” to Queen Victoria. Listen in below to find out more!

Tackling themes of adoption, imperialism, cultural appropriation and drinking tea, The Gift shows at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry from Saturday 18 until Saturday 25 January, co-produced by the Belgrade and Eclipse Theatre. Tickets are available to book now.
