Laughter will meet live music when Paven Virk’s Save Our School Dinners… Jamie! opens at the Belgrade this week, with Kadence Music percussionist Mahendra Patel now confirmed to join the creative team.

A skilled multi-instrumentalist, Patel first took up drums at the age of four. As a child, he predominantly played by ear, developing an adaptability and talent for improvisation that continues to inform his work today.

Having mastered instruments ranging from temple tablas to jazz quintet, his performances are characterised by diversity and eclecticism, crossing continents with a beautiful world music fusion. In addition to live gigs and studio session work, Patel also teaches percussion and delivers percussion workshops to community groups and schools.

“I look forward to working with such a wonderful cast, crew and director,” said Patel, advising audiences to, “Be ready for laughter.”

Following the success of last year’s research and development showcast as part of International Women’s Day, local writer Paven Virk returns to the Belgrade this September with her new show Save Our School Dinners… Jamie! telling the story of a group of dynamic dinner ladies determined to save their school one meal at a time. Featuring a diverse cast of characters all living in the Midlands but originally from all over thie world, this fresh, light-hearted comic drama aims to celebrate the diversity of the region, showing what can be achieved when everyone pulls together.

Save Our School Dinners… Jamie! shows at the Belgrade Theatre from Wednesday 12 until Saturday 15 September. Tickets are available to book now.
