Inspiring the Next Generation – the Big School tour begins next week

Posted on 1 June 2016

Imagine moving from being part of the oldest year group in a familiar school to being one of the youngest and smallest in a daunting new environment.

Thanks to the support of the 29th May 1961 Charitable Trust (Registered Charity number: 200198) and Coventry Building Employers’ Charity (Registered Charity number: 1004869), we are now in the final week of preparations for our upcoming Big School tour.

Big School is an original theatre-in-education programme for children in Year 6 that combines professional theatre with participatory activities. It is designed to enable pupils to explore their feelings about the move to secondary school and to equip them with useful strategies for dealing with issues of transition.

The Big School production starts its tour of over 40 schools next week and it is expected to reach around 2,000 school children in Coventry and Warwickshire. It will give pupils the opportunity to discuss their concerns in a safe environment and explore, as a group, the ways in which they can overcome them.

This is just one of the programmes that fall under the umbrella campaign “Inspiring the Next Generation”- which has already secured half of the £500,000 overall target and is now seeking to raise the remaining £250,000 to secure the work of the Belgrade’s Community & Education Company, for the next three years. This work includes, namely: Theatre in Education (Big School), Acting Out, Middle and Senior Youth Theatre Groups, Black and Asian Youth Theatre Groups, and our Outreach Youth Theatre).
