Festive fun: rehearsals begin for Sleeping Beauty

Posted on 31 October 2018

With just a few weeks to go until Sleeping Beauty opens on our Main Stage, rehearsals are now underway for the nation’s dreamiest pantomime here at the Belgrade Theatre.

On Monday 29 November, the cast assembled for the first time for an initial read-through of the script before the hard work of blocking and rehearsing the show got started.

Featuring a dragon, a dame and a dozing princess, the script is already sounding great, and we can’t wait to see how the final show comes together.

Back for more fun and nonsense alongside writer, director and Dame Iain Lauchlan will be comic Craig Hollingsworth, who this year plays Muddles the Jester alongside Iain’s Dame Nanny Fanny McWheeze.

Also back in Coventry following appearances in Belgrade pantos past will be Declan Wilson as the King and Vicky Field as the Queen, parents to the sleepy Princess Belle, as well as Anna Mitcham as the good fairy Azuriel.

Meanwhile, Azuriel’s sister, the wicked fairy Carabosse, will be played by Laura Judge, who comes to the Belgrade for the first time this year, alongside Joanna Thorne as the dashing Prince Valiant.

Finally, Katy Anna Southgate and Ivano Turco make their professional acting debuts as our two ensembles.

Also making a return to the Belgrade this year after a long time away is designer Terry Parsons, who has been working on the set and costumes for the show 50 years after our 1968 panto became the very first production he designed!

In addition to Belgrade staff, a select group of members of the public got the chance to sit in on the read-through, as part of our special Page to Stage package. Those purchasing Page to Stage tickets also get the chance to see a dress rehearsal and a complete performance, offering them exclusive insights into the process of bringing a show into being.

My Belgrade+ Members and Sandra and Lorna have been taking advantage of the Page to Stage package for several years.

“We’ve been coming for about eight years now, and every year it’s different. We really enjoy every part of the process – it’s amazing seeing how it changes over time,” they said.

Don’t get caught napping! Set your alarm now for when Sleeping Beauty comes to the Belgrade Theatre 21 Nov – 5 Jan. Tickets are available to book now.
