Dancers required: Join our CET Takeover with Mercurial Dance

Posted on 28 March 2018

With our 60th anniversary year now in full swing, here at the Belgrade, we’re gearing up for our first big home-produced show of the year: an ambitious performance takeover of the nearby Coventry Evening Telegraph Building.

From 10-14 July, we’ll be working alongside our partners at Mercurial Dance to fill the building with two immersive, site-specific shows, both responding creatively to real-life stories from Coventry’s rich and diverse history – a perfect way to celebrate what the city has to offer in the lead-up to its year as City of Culture in 2021.

The performances form part of the Coventry Great Place project, supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, Coventry University, University of Warwick, Coventry City Council and Coventry Business Improvement District.

In City Final, our own youth and community groups will perform across multiple floors in a large-scale promenade piece inspired by stories covered in the Coventry Telegraph over the years. Then in Retold, Mercurial Dance will draw on memories shared by members of the local community to create a unique, cabaret-style show, performed in the building’s foyer area. Those interested in submitting their memories for the show can find out more here.

But as well as seeking stories to use in their performance, Mercurial Dance are also on the look out for new dancers to join their team and help deliver an innovative and exciting experience to the public. This voluntary placement is best suited to third year dance students or recent graduates, looking to gain experience and professional training as they take their first steps into an artistic career.

The ideal candidate will be able to work collaboratively alongside an ensemble cast, and will be confident with text, audience participation, and meeting and greeting audience members as they enter the building. In addition to featuring in the show, successful applicants will be fully involved in the creative process, supporting the collection of stories from the city and helping to shape and develop the finished piece. They’ll also have the chance to benefit from expert advice on starting out as a self-employed performer, with tailored support including:

  • A seminar session on running your own business by the director
  • A seminar session on working with an independent producer and industry marketplace
  • Subject to funding, a series of coaching sessions with an accredited coach to help you focus on the first steps of your career

Expenses of up to £15 per person per day of called rehearsals (max 20 days) are also available, and the company is currently looking to develop an accommodation offer – please advise whether you require this at the time of application.

All applicants must be available to attend the following audition, rehearsal and performance dates at the Coventry Evening Telegraph Building on Corporation Street, opposite the Belgrade Theatre:
