Posted on 25 April 2018

A massive congratulations to Chenine Bhathena on being appointed Creative Director for UK City of Culture 2021. Promising to deliver “an unforgettable year” we can’t wait to witness her vision for Coventry and the journey towards 2021.

Chenine, previously the Creative Programmer for London 2012, landed the role with Coventry City of Culture Trust after a competitive three month process.

With a plethora of experience in producing and commissioning work for a diverse range of artists Chenine comments on the synergies between Coventry’s ambitions for 2021 and what she has been doing with culture and communities during her career. Recently leading the Mayor of London’s new London Borough of Culture competition and the Mayor’s programme for the London 2012 Festival Chenine delivered the largest outdoor festival seen in the capital, showcasing events across all 32 London boroughs and the City.

Excited to move to Coventry and begin the role in July Chenine comments: “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for the city and everyone has seen the positive effect it has had on Hull – but Coventry will tell its own story and will put its own stamp on City of Culture.”

The mammoth City of Culture programme could stimulate £350 million of direct economic impact, and Chenine believes Coventry can highlight and develop its role as a global leader.

She says: “This is such an exciting role and I am really looking forward to working with the team and the whole city to create something extraordinary in 2021.”

We can’t wait to welcome Chenine to Coventry and are fully behind her ambition for the City “to take a lead on some of the major issues facing the world today and be a trailblazer.”
