Be a part of our Umbrella Day installation

Fancy being part of an exciting city centre installation?

Ahead of the world premiere of Under the Umbrella 2-16 March, we’re looking for local students and Coventry residents to help us create a visual display in Broadgate inspired by some of the themes of the show.

Presented by the Belgrade in partnership with Yellow Earth Theatre and Tamasha Theatre, Under the Umbrella tells the story of Wei, a young Chinese woman studying for her PhD in Coventry. Wei is ambitious and independent, but when she reaches her 27th birthday, her mother and grandmother begin to worry about her marriage prospects, and decide to pay a visit to the Guangzhou marriage market, where the only successful transaction is a first date for your child.

Found in public parks in several major Chinese cities, marriage markets are a real phenomemon, with parents flocking there to advertise the dating profiles or “life CVs” of any unmarried adult children, often by pinning them to brightly coloured umbrellas.

As part of our campaign to raise awareness around the show, we’re planning to recreate a marriage market here in Coventry, to coincide with Umbrella Day on Sunday 10 February, but we need your help to make it happen.

We’re looking for people to submit their own “life CVs” to form part of the installation. You don’t need to give us your name – the profiles will be displayed anonymously, and the information can be real or imagined as you prefer. To create a profile for you, we need the following information:

  • Age
  • Height
  • Occupation
  • Income
  • Education level
  • Whether you own a house or car
  • And a couple of lines on what you look for in a partner

Interested? You can submit your profile via our SurveyMonkey quiz, or email if you require more information.

The details you submit will only be used as part of the display on Sunday 10 February. Take the quiz.
