Stuck for things to do over the half-term break? This February, we’re inviting kids to get creative with awful aunties and little ladybirds as our Family Fun Day returns for Spring 2018. Taking place on Wednesday 21 February, this FREE event will feature a range of hands-on activities running from 10.30am until 4pm.

In addition to live storytelling sessions, there’ll be a chance to take part in drama games, a dressing-up station where you can try on real costumes from past productions, as well as a family trail and arts, crafts and colouring-in inspired by two bestselling children’s books being brought to life on our Main Stage this season.

First up, Birmingham Stage Company will follow up their hugely successful Gangsta Granny with another hilarious David Walliams adaptation during the half-term break. Running at the Belgrade from Tuesday 20 until Saturday 24 February, Awful Auntie follows young Stella Saxby as she attempts to uncover the truth about the mysterious disappearance of her parents, thwarting the cunning schemes of her awful Aunt Alberta in the process.

Inspired by Aunt Alberta’s watchful pet owl Wagner, on Family Day, you’ll have the chance to make and decorate your very own owl mask to wear and take away from our craft tables. Look out too for sheets of Awful Auntie illustrations to colour-in.

Other activities will be looking ahead to Kenny Wax’s new adaptation of What the Ladybird Heard, the popular picture book by former children’s laureate Julia Donaldson and illustrator Lydia Monks. Showing at the Belgrade on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 April, this charming tale of how the tiniest, quietiest creature outsmarts two greedy robbers will be beautifully realised with music, puppetry, lots of laughs and plenty of audience participation.

Ahead of the show’s arrival, for this year’s Family Day Trail, we’re asking visitors to keep their eyes peeled for ladybirds on the loose! Follow the clues to help us find the brightly coloured bugs hidden around the theatre for a chance to win yourself tickets to one of our fantastic family shows. Meanwhile on the craft tables, you’ll also find everything you need make a pretty paper plate ladybird.

All these activities and more will be taking place around the Belgrade Theatre from 10.30am until 4pm on Wednesday 21 February. Entry is free and no booking is necessary – just turn up on the day!
